Embarrassing moments: at a supermaket

08/02/2010

Embarrassment is caused by social, cultural and personal circumstances. Certain situations cause embarrassment in certain cultures and societies, and the degree or acuteness of embarrassment depends on the person's character. Quite often, embarrassment is caused by circumstances beyond the person's control.

Sometimes it's hard to understand why people feel embarrassed. This afternoon, I went to a supermarket and put a number of items in the basket, and queued up at the check-out. There were no problems, until one item could not be scanned. There was a barcode on the product, but it did not match with the database. Or something like that. So the cashier had to ask her colleague in the next aisle, but he did not know the price or the code. Therefore she made an announcement on the tannoy asking for assistance: cashier 3 requires assistance. For some reason, it made me a little embarrassed. The queue built up. There was an awkward moment, waiting for a supermarket employee to check the price and come back. What do you do in these circumstances? Strike up a conversation with the cashier or other shoppers? Embarrassment increased as the clock ticked. After a few long minutes, a member of the shelving staff came back with the price.

It was a matter of a few minutes, but I really felt not only awkward but somewhat embarrassed. I wonder why.

Parliamentary privilege

Three Labour MPs are charged with theft. For some reason, these three MPs are reported as considering an invocation of parliamentary privilege to avoid prosecution. Were they finding an ingenious way of stoking up the public anger even more? The Parliament's reputation has been tarnished, and merely raising the possibility that they could be immune from prosecution does much damage to the institution, and the British democracy and constitution.

It seems odd that this method of evading prosecution is discussed at all. Would an MP claim parliamentary privilege after murdering someone in cold blood? Of course not, and there are probably very fancy legal arguments that would distinguish these particular crimes of theft from murder. However, it remains the case that these MPs stole money by making false claims. They were not fighting for the integrity of the Parliament, or against the meddlesome Crown. Fiddling forms and stealing money hardly seem central to being and discharging the duties of an MP.

Where is the sense of duty and dignity in these three MPs and their actions?

Blog design | If it isn't broke, don't fix it?

07/02/2010

Often I find myself advising others to change their site and blog designs, and experiment constantly with their sites and blogs to enhance visitors' experience and, in some cases, to generate more money. Enhance the experience. Did I actually write that? This phrase is precisely the sort of hackneyed corporate gibberish that must be banished from the language.

Resisting the temptation of chopping my unworthy fingures for writing the filth above, I think there's a virtue in striving for something better, and not being content with what one has. However, at times, the pursuit for something better can turn into an obsession, fussing about one pixel here and there, or the smallest change in the hue of the background colour. Perfection, like many othings in life, is not attainable when it comes to site / blog design. If it does the job, perhaps it is a good idea to heed the advice if it isn't broke, don't fix it. There must be a happy medium somewhere between not caring and being neuroticly obsessive, but it isn't easy to achieve that.

For someone who tends towards neurosis, look no further than me. I have wasted a few good hours of a dreary Sunday afternoon on making alterations and modifications to this blog. Watching the rugby on the television might have been a better idea, than worrying about how Internet Explorer would render the blog. I doubt today's changes make much of a difference, so I really should stop fussing about, and do something more useful.

Sumo - Asashoryu retires

Tags:
05/02/2010

As reported in an earlier post (Sumo wrestler behaving badly), pressure on Asashoryu was increasing by the day. He has decided to retire from sumo, and it is a big news in Japan. Asashoryu had engaged in a drunken brawl and he had assaulted a man in the early morning of 16 January.

The sumo association's council debated on 4 February, whether to fire him or not. There was a split between those who called for his immediate dismissal, and others who wanted to give more time to conduct proper investigation. Asashoryu was called to give statement, and he claimed that he was drunk and could not remember the incident. Some council members remained unconviced. A vote was taken, with the majority favouring dismissal. In the end, a few members, former sumo wrestlers, persuaded Asashoryu to retire. In other words, he was given the uneviable choice of resigning or be fired.

On the same day, another committee recommended that Asashoryu leave the sport. This committee can be translated approximately as the advisory committee on matters relating to yokozuna. Its main function is to recommend a sumo wrestler to the position of yokozuna to the council chairman, however it is often called to advise and comment on the conduct of yokozuna.

Asashoryu was running out of supporters within the institution, and among the wider public. The combination of drunkenness and physical assault was considered too unbecoming for a yokozuna. There is an underlying xenophobia, but Asashoryu had created too many enemies for his behaviour, which was considered immature at best.

Whatever one thinks of Asashoryu's character and behaviour, it is a shame that such a strong sumo wrestler has to leave the ring in these circumstances.

Creating 'pages' in Blogger

Tags:
04/02/2010

This new feature allows Blogger users to create up to 10 static pages, by clicking the Posting tab, and then Edit Pages. It is particularly useful for creating e.g. About this blog, Privacy policy or Contact pages. For further details, see the link above.

I think this feature can be used for various purposes, however, I don't exactly understand how different this feature is from using a (backdated) post for similar purposes, as I currently do. The Blogger engineering team should be commended for adding this feature, since it makes more choice available to the publishers, but for bloggers familiar with HTML and CSS, this feature looks like a marginal improvement. Perhaps there is value in shorter URIs, but I am not totally convinced of this either.

May be this is a small step in a bigger movement towards making Blogger more than a blogging platform? It would be great, if this were a start of a process to afford even greater flexibility for users by combining blogging functions with elemetns of traditional website pages.

Or have I missed or overlooked something, and barking up the wrong tree? Yes, probably.

Am I addicted to the internet and depressed?

03/02/2010

I am a heavy user of the internet, and possibly, or probably, addicted to it. I'm fine without internet access for a few days, but not much beyond that, since I would feel cut off from the world. I don't spend huge amounts of time on social networking sites, but I do like to read the news. It's a strange and frankly disturbing situation, because I tend to miss these virtual connections to the real world, while oblivious to what is actually present in the real world around me. Perhaps I'm also depressed too. This is a worrying study.

New cold war?

03/02/2010

Tensions between the US and China seem to be rising. Recent acrimony over cyber-attacks against Google and other companies emanating from China was followed by the US government's decision to permit arms sale to Taiwan. Perhaps this is the beginning of a new cold war, between the US and China, that will shape the lives of many people in the coming decades. These two conflicts may be symbolic of the tenor and nature of the struggles to come.

The first issue over cyber-attacks has been linked to notions such as openness, freedom, liberty and democracy. The potential and merit of the internet rest in its unfettered accessibility for all. The ideals and values of freedom and democracy are claimed to be universal, but the US has enjoyed or arrogated itself the leading role in their dissemination. It is, in other words, a struggle over ideas and ideals. In the last cold war, the Soviet Union had Communism, but does China have an overall belief or a universal system? China has to come up with a convincing set of values that can appeal to outsiders, if it were to combine the soft power of ideals with the hard power of the arms. The Chinese government probably will be very busy keeping Chinese people content for the foreseeable future.

Arms sale to Taiwan is always contentious, as China's position on Taiwan is well-known. Was this sale necessary because of the ever-increasing defence expenditure in China, and consequently China's expanding military capability? Was this an American act intended to warn China not to push too far in flexing its military muscle? Political and diplomatic decisions are rarely made for one reason, and there were many other factors that the decision-makers have considered. Arms sale to Taiwan represents the difficulty of countering China's military strength and threat.

At the moment, China has not yet found a narrative to counter these moves, other than to point out that such US actions are mistakes and harm Sino-American bilateral relationship. The US seems to have an upper hand, both in terms of the soft power of ideas and values, and military power. But as Chinese economy grows, and its military capability increases, the balance will become increasingly finer. Dangerous times ahead?

Direct Eurostar service to Amsterdam

Tags:
02/02/2010

New high-speed tracks have recently opened in Belgium and the Netherlands, making the journey time from Brussels to Amsterdam less than 2 hours. In other words, a direct service between London and Amsterdam, and for that matter a London to Cologne service, would take under 4 hours. While it is still pretty long, it would be less hassle than flying, and I'd think there is a potential demand to justify such connections.

There is one practical problem: border control. Unless the UK joins the Schengen Area, passports need to be controlled. At the moment, Eurostar travellers enter the Schengen Area in Britain. After passing through the ticket gates and security control, French border police stamp passengers' passports. Conversely, travellers to London enter the UK in Brussels, Paris and other stations in France.

If there were direct trains between London and Amsterdam, then there may be passengers boarding in Amsterdam who alight at Antwerp or Brussels, which would make passport control in Amsterdam a complicated affair. Anomalies such as the example quoted above already exists, since some passengers use Eurostar to travel from Brussels to Lille. Border control on departure also means setting up a separate section of Eurostar, which demands space. It used to be the case that passport control took place on the train, under the Channel, and that may be an option for trains starting in Amsterdam or Cologne. Alternatively, passport control could take place on arrival for those travelling from the Netherlands and Germany, but not for those travelling from Brussels or stations in France. This problem, therefore, is not insurmountable.

I haven't looked at the operations of the Eurotunnel and Eurostar closely, but there shouldn't be a technical or capacity problem for more trains to run under the Channel. So I hope that rail companies will seriously consier such options.

Up in the Air; It's Complicated; Avatar

Up in the Air
