Airports in London: build, expand or do nothing?

There is a renewed debate on airport capacity in London. Heathrow is already bursting at the seams, but building a third runway at this airport has been ruled out. The available options seem to consist of (1) build a new airport; (2) expand an existing airport, but not Heathrow; (3) do nothing. The central problem is not that there is insufficient airport capacity in London, but that the capacity is not concentrated at one airport. For that reason, and if I were in charge (which I am not, would not be and should not be), then I'd close down Heathrow, and build a new airport or expand an existing airport, so that there is a hub airport in London with 4 or 5 runways.

Seen from the viewpoint of the British domestic politics, it was probably the only course of action he could take, given the commotions from the backbenchers. He will claim it a victory: a strange kind of victory in that it made a deal for the eurozone countries easier, because such an accord did not have to involve Britain, and at the cost of goodwill and influence in Europe. Furthermore, the veto stopped the treaty from being amended, but it did not achieve anything to safeguard British interests, that Mr Cameron had sought to do.
