Photographs Kawagoe Kita-in Shōrōmon

Shōrō means ‘belfry’ and mon means ‘gate’. The upper part of this building houses a temple bell, and the lower part acted as a gate. There are records indicating that this gate was built in 1633, and may have escaped the fire that engulfed this temple in 1638. The bell has an engraving indicating that it dates from 1702.
