GDR’s Palace of the Republic was built on the ground where the City Palace once stood. It stands opposite the Berlin Cathedral.

Many communist regimes, for some reason, seem to be obsessed with building palaces. In many cases, they were used for the leaders or the party hierarchy, even if the names suggested that the palaces belonged to the people, or to the state.
